Funky House Conventions

Funky house artists usually produce live, upbeat songs which are frequently played in house parties, raves, clubs and bars. This is also fed through in the music videos as we often denote large groups of people partying/dancing and having a good time.

The following funky house music videos below portray the life style of young adults wanting to let loose and enjoy themselves. This attitude is expressed through the lyrics, mis-en-scene and effects in the video.

Both females and males are denoted in funky house videos as the music appeals to both genders. The women are dressed glamorously usually wearing make up, dresses and heels, the representations of females in funky house videos could be seen as positive and negative. Some could argue that the way the some of the women are provocatively dressed(tight dresses and mini skirts) have a bad influence on younger girls. Yet others would point out that the women are beautiful and display wealth which is a strong representation for females.

The majority of people denoted in funky house videos are young adults aged 18-23, however the music appeals to a wider age group which consists of 16-25 year old. Black people are predominately featured in the videos which suggests funky house listeners are mainly from black backgrounds.

The mis-en-scene- such as lighting and costume in the videos portrays of vibrant colours to compliment the lively atmosphere. The locations are usually in clubs, parties and bars which young adults in the target audience will be able to relate to.The audiences main interest would be partying, drinking, music and the opposite sex.

The Editing is also rapid and shots are quick, this compliments the fast pace and upbeat music. In a lot of funky house videos the camera is moving(either panning or zooming) which gives the effect that the audience is also moving along, they feels involved in the music video and therefore have more pleasant viewing experience.

week 4 blog reflection

Narrative analysis

We decided to use all different narrative structures in our music video as it would appeal more to our target audience as well as to examiner showing we have expanded our ideas and shown off what we can do with the conceptual and narrative aspects of the video.

We looked at different examples of performance included in music videos and how they work well included in them.we found that it helps to establish the artist and represent them well, showing them performance lets the audience see how they performer, dance etc.

Main narrative idea

The narrative that we thought of is similar to Taylor swift you belong with me video. It has her as a geek wanting to tell the boy she loves him however hes got a `popular' girlfriend who she cant compete with.Hes nice to her and they are Friends but he cant see what right in front of him, near the end of the video she transforms her self and tells him she loves him and they get together.

Our video will be similar in terms of the characters and structure of the narrative. However the male character will be the opposite being horrible to her and not noticing shes there, this will help us to use representation of stereotyping people form there looks.

We will make the video had a sense of comical elements e.g her dancing stupidly in her room, geeky clothes, falling over, clumsiness. We wont have alot of comedy as we will have numerous shots of her upset, trying out new looks but not working.

The most important shots will be the begging to get the audience into the character of the girl in the video till the end were she transforms herself into a new person.

Dance sequence

We decided to also include sequences in our video we had a look at videos included dance sequences and we notice mostly are done in a dance studio, made up set, or an outside location e.g street, house or club.

the examples we found that we lied and thought would suit our artist were livi frank now im that chick her movements suit the song well and are tite and specific to the lyrics we also looked at ciaras videos as she includes dance sequence's in most of her videos.

Her dance sequence are very structured and are always specific to the kind of song she does e.g a slow song the movements will be soft and close whereas in a upbeat song there will be more dancers and harsher movements.

The kind of dance style we would include would be structured however aspects of improvisation due to the song's rythynm and showing the dancers having a good time.

Performance

We will include performance elements in our music video as his helps to show off the artists and feature them in the video as much as they can e.g during narrative part dance and performance.

The more exposure int eh video the more likely the audience will pick up on the song. All these examples i have picked out are all very different genres of music however all embody the performance qualities e.g band being showed, microphones seeing ,stage set and backdrops.

We want to include this in our music video as we feel it will work well with the song and show the artist's performance skills. We are fortunate to have access too green screen, smoke and light machines as this means we will be able to shoot performance scenes and be able to attach any destination/location with the artist in it.

The Survey and Focus Group

It is essential to research and collect information about our audience in order for the music video to appeal to them.During class we were asked to create a survey and interview a focus group in order to find out who exactly are our target audience. The survey questions will enable us to find out specific information so we can focus on targeting a sector of young people that have the same thing in common. Here is the link to the survey:

Audience Research SURVEY

Focus Groups:

Other than one on one interviews focus groups are an excellent way of getting detailed responses an opinions. We hope to get around 5-10 people to discuss music videos, we aim to find out what they dislike/like about certain music videos which will help us during the whole process of our production.

-The session should last about 10-20minutes and will be filmed
-Both genders should be present to get a balanced view
-The people in the focus group should be able to give their own opinions and back it up with examples
-We will ask people individually about what they think to start up a lengthy discussion

Week 2 blog reflection

Analysis of 3 Music Videos

I choose to analysis Keri Hilson's `slow dance' video because i liked the genre of R&B and it has similar genre, representations and technical aspects that we would like to include in our music video.

The technical construction of this video is quiet slow paced reflecting the songs pace, the editing is cut to the main baseline of the song and this used through out the video to indicate a cut or the dance movements she does fitting in with the songs rhythm.I like how the camera has a lot of close up of her and stick with a pattern every other shot is a close up of her face others her body or standing up at the beginning of the song.

In the video it displays good representations of women that we would like to portray in our video. Her attitudes to going out, she starts the video getting ready for a night on the town with her girls.I like how the video Starts her off getting ready for the night as it is true to how women take there time to get ready e.g the close up on the Ipod, her taking her time, dancing and daydreaming about the night ahead and her friends waiting for her being the last out.

At the beginning they used a flashback which gets the audience interested in her intentions for the night how the narrative will continue. The genre of this fits into the R&B category, this video represents this well with the slow pace it uses, the kind of set and locations that it was filmed at and the artist itself.

The video represents women as independent, got there own job, financially stable, nice flat, groups of loyal female friends ready for a night on the town. This helps to go against the stereotypes of females relying on male approval, men being dominant sex and all relationship shown as negative and women displaying there unhappiness. This video is different as it shows `romance' as a positive thing showing her finding a guy in a club and playing along rather than negatively.

The whole concept of the video works well because the video and song go very well together through the uses of editing, locations and actors. The lyrics and video relate well e.g `slow dance' shots were she slow dances with a guy, at the beginning were she is getting ready and studio location on her own.The cuts work well with the beat of the music as well as the type of camera movements used such as close ups and long shots.

I choose to analyses Diana Vickers `the boy who murdered love' video as I liked the uses of graphics and animations, the song genre and the video's narrative structure.

The representation of women are portrayed by her emotions of feeling hurt, explaining her feeling towards her boyfriend linking in with the lyrics/title `the boy who murdered love' .It goes against the stereotypes of women being weak and giving just taking back there partner and not wanting to leave. This video shows her being strong telling the audience exactly how she feels and having her leave at the end gives women hope of doing the same.

The technical construction they used in the graphics and colours reminded me of childlike imagination, how she feels through the uses of colours and animations words and pictures were used to enhance the videos interest and quality. The editing cut with the beat and the most important words in the lyrics such as love, and shot fitting in with the tile of song. The narrative focuses more on her leaving him and how she feels about him and how he’s hurt her. The editing show this through using numerous close ups on her face, Her body language and graphics used around her.

I like the way the editing uses graphics to show when the words of the songs are coming e.g. shot, love, murdered. These help the audience pick up the song making it catchy and making the video interesting and exciting to watch. The use of colours brightens the video up making it more interesting on the eye as well as having visuals for the audience to read. She fits into the genre of pop, and fits this kind of genre from the way she dresses, the song beat and rhythm and the way the video is shown.

The narrative shows love in a negative and disappointing light. The video includes her filmed in her house, bedroom, outside, shots of her boyfriend. The very end of the video is significant as it shows her walking away with a packed back this indicates to the audience that her feeling towards him throughout the video have been for the her reason to leave. I like the narrative throughout the video and the effects it has on the audience .It makes you question what her lyrics mean in relevance to the man in the video, why and what will happen.

Overall the video works well because both video and song suit the artists well e.g. the video being light and airy showing her personality and reflecting the way she is dressed. The graphic/colours that were edited in were to bring unique twist to the video and increase audience appeal. The editing cuts especially well to the main lyrics e.g. shot and love. The representations of women are highlighted well as she doesn’t put up with her boyfriend treating her bad .We see in the video as she leaves, See her being independent and strong willed. Narrative works well with the song and shows her true feeling and exposing her vulnerability in the video.

This is the music video to a funky house track by Meleka called 'Go'.Both the song and video relate the theme of love and relationships which is also our chosen theme.

The storyline conveys young woman and a man that meet at a club, they start dating and eventually end up in a relationship. We realise they have been together for 3years, which is represented through anniversary cards. The female character is having doubts about her man, their relationship starts to deteriorate and after some time she catches him in bed with another woman.Later we see that Meleka(girlfriend) has killed him, at the end of the video we assume she is being escorted to court by police.

The narrative follows a fragmented structure as the story is told in reverse order through flashbacks. The most used setting is of the artist in a car, the camera then cuts to flashbacks to reveal the storyline. The car ride is significant as she is thinking about past events that occurred and also taking us on that journey.

The video starts with a female being escorted out of a house by police men and surrounded by.This opening suddenly sparks questions for the audience. Who is this women? Why is she with police? Why are the paparazzi interested in he? The female is in her 20's, she looks smart and responsible and doesn't seem like the type of character to get into trouble with the police. So far the audience is hooked to the storyline, the opening has arisen questions which the viewers are looking for answers to.

The editing at the beginning is also rapid to match the uneasy atmosphere, this puts us in her position as she is being rushed to car whilst the paparazzi swarm her. The quick cuts ensure the audience aren't too sure of what is going on with everything moving fast, at the same time we see the female is distressed and uncomfortable as the camera shows close ups of her face.

The video has an unexpected twist at the end which challenges mainly the stereotypes of women. We find out that the main female character killed her boyfriend which is a shock to all of us as woman are usually portrayed as the weaker race. We also assume murderers to be tough older males but in this case it is a young women. The directors choice of revealing the storyline was different and unusual, the day after the secret is out we see the female in bed with her boyfriend (this is confusing for the viewer as it appears that she has taken him back after cheating) she gets out of bed and the shots is held on her boyfriend after a few cuts to different scenes we see forensics taking pictures of his body suggesting he is dead.

The narrative of this video is very similar to our idea, we are planning to use similar locations like a club, cinema, bedroom which young people can relate to.

This is the music video to a track called 'On a Mission' by Katy B. The first few shots are of locations in London including the city and the O2, this instantly appeals to a London audience as they will be able to relate to settings that they may have visited. The video consists of people of all different races, As we can see the artist is white and the DJ is black which represents London as being a multi cultural society. The camera also cuts to a male wearing an 'i love London' t-shirt, this prop suggests the artist is trying to represent he city.

Through the props and settings we can tell the video appeals to young people aged 16-25, the video also enhances music equipment as we see cuts dedicated to a mike, mixer, speaker and other music equipment, this connotes that the audience may not only be interested in the music but the production too. There is also a clear close up shot of the artist wearing Nike trainers which is a well known popular brand, which suggests the audience are into sports gear and maybe other designer wear.

Editing is fast pace along with the track and often cuts to the beat. There are various closeup and mid shots of the artist whilst she is singing to highlight the importance of her lyrics.Through out the video the lighting is minimal and dull, apart from the artist as we always see her in light. The video has no clear narrative, the main activity is the artist performance and the focus on the crowd. The concept of the video works well, even though there is not much contrast between the locations the fast pace editing and varied camera angles allows the audience to sustain their interest.

My song-for pitch

Aretha Henry-I want you

My feedback

Strengths, weaknesses and Improvements

I think i succeed in explaining who my target audience was and what gender i was aiming it at by stating age range, what hobbies and interests relating to the artist and what genre.I Let my audience know what kind of narrative i was going for and how i would portray this on camera.I made it clear what kind narrative i was going for what genre and how it would relate to my artist .I think i explained what locations i would like to use well and why i chosen those specific locations in relation to my artists and how they would work well for the narrative.I expressed the representations of women well and whether id be for against the stereotypes/ideology.

I feel i could of use more visual images and explained more who the artist was e.g there background and specifically there music.I think i could of added more information about the kind of ancillary products related to the artist and how that would benefit the artist itself.I feel i could of spoken more and read out more of what i had written rather than picking out small sections as I may of missed important information out.I could of elaborated more on what kind of video it would be like e.g giving examples of currents videos with the same aspects of colour, editing, costumes which would of given the audience an idea of what i was aiming for.

The improvements I would make would be to make my presentation longer by adding more detail, visuals e.g more videos and pictures.I would practice speaking through the presentation before it has to be pitched so i am confident with the presentation and see if i have missed any vital info.I would make sure that all spelling and grammar is thoroughly checked before as some of my sentences didn't make sense.Overall i would make the presentation longer, more interesting for the audience by adding in visuals, videos, questions and more time for discussion at the end.

Hadouken and gallows comparison task

Audience Profile

Audience Profile

Comparison Questions

How does the bands typography and visual appearance differ?
Both bands have specific typography that represents their style and music.Gallows typography uses only certain colours such as black white and deep reds which reflect the emotion being conveyed by the music and lyrics for example anger, sadness and hatred.
Hadouken colours are very different, they use luminous yellows, blues and pinks. These colours make them stand out therefore designed to catch the audience's eye.
This is completely opposite to the way gallows use colour.Gallows isn't necessarily associated with negative emotions however the design and animations used on t-shirts are very similar to gallows fro example using images of demons, aliens and scary disturbing faces.
Gallows t-shirts are more appropriate for the adult market. Both bands have consistently decided to ensure that their fonts and other texts are consistent on all marketing and their products for example their websites,Cd covers,t shirts badges and posters.

Gallows visual appearance is based on dark colours using just white and black for logo, typography specific genre using shields , and elements of regal influence. This makes them unique and lets the audience automatically associate their visual appearance with the band gallows.
Hadouken visual appearance will also stand out as there appearance is different creative and reflects the band well.Overall both bands have similar typography using the same sort of colours, and designs.
How does the bands merchandising differ?
Gallows merchandise consists of t-shirts with Frank Cater(lead singer) own original designs on it, CD's, hats ,hoodies, electronic gift certificate,Skips song sticker.
Hadouken merchandise consists of t-shirts with their own designs, bags, badges and posters.
Hadouken have greater range of merchandise aimed at a female audience for example T-shirts, bags, girls bundle, like a goodie bag.
This increases the fan base for women and having a female band member lets fans identify more closely with the band.
However gallows merchandise has limited appeal for women therefore they may not plan to attract a female audience. Both bands have a range of merchandise which is similar
Both bands give their fans the opportunity to win tickets and chances to see them at gigs.
The only obvious differences between the bands merchandise is how it relates to the message they are sending to their fans by the music they play.Gallows music is more `shouting lyrics' showing the audience how they feel and letting them be a part of that experience.
Hadouken are more relaxed about how they approach their feeling towards fans and is a reflection of their style and dynamic.Gallows has products of the kind animation reflecting their emotions.Hadouken have more products with just their logo.

How do these differences increase their appeal to their differing niche audiences?
The difference account to how well the band is known through word of mouth, gigs branding and popularity. If the band can establish themselves well in their niche audience then they are more likely to be known for standing out and being unique.

Gallows appeal is based on there ability to involve and interact with the audience making hem feel part of the band as well as making them feel the same e.g the way they dress having tattoos and piercing etc.

Hadouken allow fans to create there own identity's through clothes having exclusive items such as t-shirts which people who don't know about the band will find interesting.
This is also vital for creating word of mouth and creating a fan base were their is loyalty and everyone shares their `like' of the band within peer groups.

The bands should establish themselves as unique not wanting to be like big mainstream bands who are merchandised by record company's.The bands want to appeal to the audience who likes the idea that they haven't sold out also they wish to give the fans `value for money' so they don't feel ripped off by the bands.
Overall the difference's are positive as it gives them the opportunity's to create a buzz around their band and make all design themselves as well as getting a say in the branding side putting their mark on it.
This appeal to the audience as they are closer to the bands and feel that anything they have designer they would be happy to were themselves therefore happy to sell to their fans.
Considering the range of ancillary products available for both brands identify three other products you would develop to help each bands brand
The kind of products I would develop for Gallows would be relevant for there target audience as this would be beneficial for sales of their merchandise.

The first product I think would appeal to their audience would be a Guitar. This would appeal to musicians and collectors as the band could sign the guitar personally and design the outside of the guitar.

The second kind of product i think would benefit them is more variety of clothing such as trainers, belts and jewelry. This would mean original designs and the fans could pay extra to have these accessories personalised.

The last product I think would benefit them is musical equipment such as CD players,mp3s, speakers this allows for fans to purchase devices for playing Gallows music. This will give Gallows the opportunity to put their logo on it, animation and designs and choose what colours and size there merchandise will come in.

The kind of products that would be beneficial to develop for Hadouken will also be relevant for their target audience and specific for their genre of music.

The first product i think will help their bands brand is a skate board. There genre of music fits into the indie rock pop lifestyle and allot of the fans follow this.
A skate board could have their logo on it as well as original designs to fit into the product. It can also be made for both men and women changing the colours and shape.

The second product I think would work well would be certain items of clothing such as belts, trainers, and skinny jeans. This fits in with the style of the band being punk rock and them wearing the same kinds of clothes will increase the brand name e.g fans will want to were items that the band are wearing so now they can also have access to exactly the same products as them.
The last product I think would work well for there brand would be going towards is musical equipment such as guitars, microphones drums etc. This will appeal to aspiring musicians and fans and having them design the equipment they can personalise it add their own flare and creations.
Here are both bands in their music videos from this you can see that both are very different in their approach to performance, visual appearance, attitude and specific audience appeals. However this doesn't change how popular both bands have become.

Both video really reflect the bands aswell as their branding products.

Reading week -gallows and musc vid questions.

Gallows

Target Audience:

There target audience is niche audience as they don't necessarily want to be known as part of the mainstream culture in the music industry. The type of people they interest are people that favour the punk rock culture and genre of music including the music clothing tattoos piercings.

The target audience also is drawn to live performances and a part of the live atmosphere. gallows involves audiences in their performances making them feel a part of the band.

the age of audience that gallows attracts would be between the ages of 17-30.The younger audience are more likely to g and see them regularly, by the latest t-shirts, hats etc whereas the 25-30 may not have time to experience them live as much however more likely to purchase Cd's and DVDs.

The audience may have similar hobbies and interests as the band as they favour the bands music and culture e.g tattoos piercing, art and designs as all mechanise is created and designed by the band itself, lead singers talents as tattoo artists may interest people aspiring to become tattooist or thinking about getting tattoos. There audience will also be able to relate to them from were they come from.Home fans are more likely to feel connected to band as they may have known them from being unknown to being a successful band in the punk rock genre.

Uses and gratifications with the fans:
In terms of entertainment they are good at making the audience feel part of the band and that they are the most important member,This lets the audience knows that they are appreciate and their support is given back through small giggs, large performances etc. They value there fans and give them the best shows they can.
Gallows also gives back through websites such as facebook twitter letting the fans know what going in e.g giggs, tickets and there appreciate of there support. It allows for the fans to write to them making them feel closer to the band. There official website also lets fans know whats new, were they will be next playing upcoming tours and new merchandise.

The fans are on common ground as they are all there for one reason, share similar interests and a.Online fan sites also create social unity between fans e.g meeting up for gigs and band events. There music relates to there own life experiences and can help the audience thought their own as well. The audience can relate to the lyrics and share the same emotions.
It also creates social relationships for people as it brings people together who follow the same interests and stops form people being segregated.Their own personal identity rubs off to fans and creates a community within the band, this lets the fans be a part of this music culture and having something to belong to.

Why are music videos increasingly important in promoting an artist?

Music videos are key in promoting the artist. It acts as a way of selling them self to the audience and getting their music heard.the record companies have benefited through the introduction of music videos as it allows to creates awareness of a new single or album meaning more people will want to buy/download the single and also listen to the album.

It has also benefited broadcasters as they can have specific channels that can relate to the artists genre of music e.g kerrang the artists shown on their are more likely to get a wider audience appeal as it is watched by the heavy metal/rock audiences.Whereas if a band more suited to kerrang were played on MTV base they wouldn't get the same popularity.

The music videos also allow the artist to highlight and showcase there talents through performing. e.g female artists such as Cheryl Cole promote their talents not only through singing into the camera and doing dance sequences but through the clothes and make up she wears.A clear example of this is in her fight for this love video.

Nowadays every artists supports their singles by making a music video. It is now expected of the music culture for an artist/band to have a relevant music video to have attached to their song, even if they are not one the more famous artists e.g such channels as channel AKA are prime example of a music video Chanel were they let young aspiring rnb singers and rappers to post there videos on their Chanel without them being successful music artists. This gives them a chance to boost there name as a artist and be able to aim it at their niche audience.

(example of the type of artists who submit videos)

What are the three types of music videos?

The theory of the type of music videos that there are came from Frith in 1988 who came up with 3 categories that music videos would fit into.
The first category is a performance video which would capture live performance of the artists and showing exciting clips from performances such as being on tour.An example of this is Kelly Clarkson's first single, this captures different clips of her live performances rounding up to clips of her winning.

The second category was narrative video, this includes the video telling a story and the music and lyrics being prominently related. An example of a narrative video is enrique ingleus hero it has a clear tragic love story and the imagery and lyrics relate well.

The last catergory is a conceptual video this is any video that doesn't have a narrative or performance it can be shocking, emotional, humorous and display ideas of ideas linking with the artists. An example of this is Junior Senior everybody which doesn't follow a narrative or performance but uses animation to highlight the lyrics and themes.

Readiing week vid question contd.

Why is branding a band/artist especially important when marketing towards niche subcultures?
Branding is an important marketing tool in insuring that audiences stay interested and part of the band/artists.Bigger more well known artists have opportunities to created large branding companies to promote themselves such as Beyonce who launched the fashion label deroen with her sister promoting herself through clothing, as well Gwen Stefani with her clothing range l.a.m.b and perfume range G.

This increases fans and people admire Beyonces fashion style and her having a label will mean allot of women will love to have the chance to mirror her style for half the price.
Some artists cannot afford to launched such big brand company however find ways of promoting themselves such as Skepta who produced t-shirts with his boy better know label on them and bands such as gallows who design all their t-shirts with the art of lead singer which appeal to the niche audience with his eccentric and punk rock designs. This makes the audience feel part of the band and on the same level as them instead feeling distant.
If particular brands are focused on different genre on music it is more likely the band/artist will gain more fans and make the fans feel that the artist is paying back to their audience letting them have parts of their lifestyle e.g clothing's, hats, accessories, piercings, bags and anything else related to the band/artists.
Niche subcultures are relatively smaller than a mainstream audience so it is easier to sell t-shirts and other products to a niche audience as they pay less and appreciate it more whereas some artists you have to pay over 40 for a t-shirts from a concent showing it isn't personal and just been endorsed by company and not come the artist first hand.

How does within a band increase appeal to a niche audience?

If the branding is within a band rather than done by someone who isn't in the band it becomes less personalised. The audience wont feel connected to the band as it may not reflect them enough as a band meaning the audience Will feel like any other fan.

However if the band has a prominent part in the branding of products then they get to make decision e.g such as t-shirts they ll get to design the logo, colours, designs etc. This Will make the audience feel he same as the band as both band and audience will share the same interests and this will reflect the kind of branding they will produce.

A clear example of within a band branding is the gallows they design all their products which makes there niche audience more likely to want to buy and experience the band through the produce they sell.
